Poway Curves Wants Your Shoes, for a Good Cause
The fitness center will be collecting new and used shoes to donate to Soles4Souls.
1. On Saturday, will begin its Soles4Souls shoe drive, collecting new and used shoes to distribute in parts of the world where they are needed the most. Souls4Soles was started in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami in Asia and Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and has given away more than 14 million pairs of new and gently used shoes. Curves will be collecting shoes through July 30.
2. Cal Fire crews are on the scene of a 400-acre brush fire near Warner Springs in the far northeastern reaches of San Diego County. The fire was reported at 10:40 p.m. Thursday and was 10 percent contained Friday morning, said Cal Fire Capt. Mike Mohler. The so-called Eagle Fire off Highway 79 and Camino San Ignacio is threatening two cabins and numerous archaeological sites on the Coyote Indian Reservation, Mohler said.
3. A Hall of Fame jockey who won the opening-day stakes at this summer's Del Mar thoroughbred-racing season was jailed hours later on suspicion of driving while intoxicated in Torrey Highlands, authorities said Thursday. San Diego police arrested Mike Earl Smith, 45, shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 13900 block of Via Albertura, near Carmel Valley Road, SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said. The Pasadena resident's 2011 Land Rover allegedly was weaving while passing through the area at a very slow speed, prompting a patrol officer to pull Smith over on suspicion of DUI, Brown said. The jockey said he had left a restaurant a short time earlier.
