5 Things: Panda Birthday Party, Pimps Arrested & Free Circus Tickets

Find out what the San Diego Zoo got its giant panda cub Xiao Liwu for his first birthday.

Here are 5 Things You Need to Know in Rancho Bernardo for Tuesday:

  1. Presents for "Little Gift": Xiao Liwu started the week the best way possible: with cake! The  San Diego Zoo's giant panda cub turned 1 on Monday, celebrating with cake and his parents Bai Yun and father Gao Gao who are on loan from the Chinese government. His name means "Little Gift" and he received a three-tiered ice and bamboo cake flavored with yams, apples and shaved carrots.
  2. FBI Arrests Six Alleged San Diego-Area Pimps: The FBI has arrested 159 alleged pimps and recovered 105 child prostitution victims in a three-day nationwide enforcement known as Operation Cross Country VII. Six of the pimps arrested and five of the children rescued are from the San Diego area.
  3. Number of the Day—4: That's how many tickets to the circus you can win on RB Patch this week! The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is coming Aug. 8-11 to Valley View Casino Center (formerly the San Diego Sports Arena). All you have to do is leave a comment on the contest post to enter to win.
  4. Fixing Filner: Mayor Bob Filner said he's going to therapy for two weeks to fix his problems with women. He's admitted to being disrespectful and intimidating, but he's been accused of sexual harassment. Local clinicians say therapy can fix his problems, but it will take commitment, strong motivation and time.
  5. Talking Trayvon Martin: San Diego Unified officials are considering opening a discussion with middle and high school students about the killing of 17-year-old Florida teen Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman, according to City News Service. The latter recently was acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges in the case that involves allegations of racism. Is this a conversation you would like to see among Poway Unified students?
