Section of Southbound I-15 to Close Sunday

Drivers will have to take a detour in Escondido so Caltrans can build a sign over the highway.

Updated 3:53 p.m. Friday to clarify that the closure will be for 4.5 hours.

Drivers headed south for Ranch Bernardo on Interstate 15 Sunday will have to take a detour in Escondido, as Caltrans has announced it is closing a section of all southbound lanes late Sunday evening through early Monday morning to install large overhead signs that will span the highway.

All southbound lanes between Ninth Avenue and Centre City Parkway will close at midnight on Sunday evening and reopen by 4:30 a.m. Monday for a 4.5 hour closure, weather permitting, according to Caltrans. A detour will direct motorists to exit at Ninth Avenue and travel east, then turn south on Centre City Parkway, where they can re-enter I-15.

The northbound lanes will not be affected, but four more closures are planned in the coming days to complete work on the signs.

This is one of the last major construction activities on the north segment of the I-15 Express Lanes Project. The north segment is a four-mile stretch that runs from Centre City Parkway to state Route 78. Once completed in December, there will be 20 consecutive miles of express lanes on I-15 from state Route 78 to state Route 163.
