L.A. County Sees Unemployment Drop

Despite a slight decline in the unemployment rate, about 590,000 people remain jobless.

Los Angeles County's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped 0.2 percent between March and April, but it's still higher than the statewide rate, according to numbers released by the state Employment Development Department on Friday.

The 12.1 percent rate for April is lower than March's 12.3 percent rate and April 2010's 12.4 percent rate, the EDD reported. Of the county's labor force of 4.9 million, about 590,000 people were unemployed in April.

The state's jobless rate dropped from 12 percent in March, with 2.17 million people unemployed, to 11.9 percent in April, with 2.14 million unemployed.

The national unemployment rate was 9 percent in April, 8.8 percent in March and 9.8 percent in April 2010.

About 13,100 jobs in non-agricultural areas—5,200 jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector—were created in Los Angeles County between March and April.
