Redondo Beach High Surf Advisory: Large Waves, Rip Currents

REDONDO BEACH, CA — A high surf advisory is in effect for Redondo Beach this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

Beachgoers at the Los Angeles County Coast and Catalina and Santa Barbara Islands can expect large breaking waves of 4 to 7 feet with dangerous rip currents, the NWS reports. Local sets up to 10 feet are possible during the peak of the event between Friday night and Saturday.

The advisory is issued for 2 p.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Sunday.

"There is an increased risk for ocean drowning," the NWS reports. "Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore."

A high surf advisory is issued to warn locals that high surf will affect beaches in the area, creating beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.

"Swim near a lifeguard," the NWS reports. "If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help."
