Presentation by Denise Jaffke: Shore Whaling along the California Coast

Join us for a captivating journey into a forgotten chapter of San Mateo County history with underwater archaeologist Denise Jaffke, who will speak on the history of shore whaling along the California Coast on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 1 p.m

Denise will transport you back in time to when whale spouts dotted our horizon and bustling whaling stations operated right here in San Mateo County.

Jaffke, who is a member of the California State Parks Dive Team, will draw on recent archaeological surveys conducted by California State Parks and the University of California, which has focused on the remains of the whaling stations that once operated in this region including two in San Mateo County - - one at Pigeon Point and the other at Pillar Point.

This presentation is free for museum members and is also included with museum admission. Admission can be purchased at the door the day of the event.
