Congrats to Redwood City's New Deputy Police Chief

Redwood City has a new deputy police chief.

Redwood City Police Chief JR Gamez announced Thursday that Gary Kirby has been promoted from the department's internal ranks to fill the position of Deputy Chief. 

Deputy Chief Kirby has served as a law enforcement professional for over 26 years, according to a statement the department sent out Thursday.

Deputy Chief Kirby graduated from San Jose State University and began his career in law enforcement with the San José Police Department in January of 1986.

During his time in San Jose, Kirby climbed the ranks. He served in several capacities, including undercover work in narcotics, solving homicide investigations, and working other high-profile cases. 

Deputy Chief Kirby was recognized by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office as Homicide Investigator of the Year, receiving this distinction twice, the first in 1999 and again in 2002, for his work on a number of highly complex homicide investigations that resulted in successful prosecutions. 

He also worked in the METRO division, helping to establish rapid-response programs in San Jose, as well as serving as director of the Police Academy, an investigator for the department’s Internal Affairs Unit, and in the Office of the Chief's research and development unit, among many other capacities.

Redwood City Police Chief JR Gamez praised the department’s new Deputy Chief and stated, "Gary Kirby is well known for his visionary leadership style and exceptional dedication to public service. He is an asset to the profession of law enforcement and we are proud to have him serving the citizens of Redwood City as an executive member of our organization.”
