Dragon Theatre to Celebrate Grand Opening Downtown Friday

Redwood City is gearing up for the grand opening of a very different kind of business this Friday.

After many long months of transition and renovation, Dragon Theatre Productions is finally ready to celebrate its official opening, of both its new Redwood City theater and its first big production at the new location.

Mayor Alicia Aguirre and members of the City Council will be on hand for a special ribbon cutting ceremony Friday at 5:30 p.m. at the new theater at 2120 Broadway. Free tours of the new theater will then be offered through 7 p.m., leading up to the start of the first show.

Friday will mark opening night of Dragon Theatre's production of the play "After Ashley," by playwright Gina Gionfriddo.

Dragon Theatre describes "After Ashley" as "a biting, dark satire that looks at a father and son coping with the loss of a loved one in the eye of a media storm. 'After Ashley' skewers television shrinks, Lifetime movies, Law & Order: SVU, reality TV, and the recent trend toward tell-all true crime stories and our fascination with the gory details of murder."

The cast features Dale Albright, Tim Garcia, Sean Gilvary, Meredith Hagedorn, Evan Michael Schumacher and Caitlyn Tella. The play is directed by Dale Albright.

Tickets to this Friday's opening night production, which includes a post-show gala, are $35 general for general admission, $30 for seniors and $25 for students. "After Ashley" runs through Feb. 17.

Mayor Aguirre said the entire City is excited to welcome Dragon Theatre to town.

"We are very excited to have Dragon Theatre be a part of our Theater District in downtown Redwood City," she said. "Their mission is to to produce professional theater that is uncommon, intimate, and accessible to its audiences, artists and community. They are a perfect fit for our community, and will be in the heart of Redwood City."
