Illegal Fireworks In Redwood City Spark Concern For Officials
Fireworks are illegal in Redwood City and most cities on the Peninsula, but recent incidents prompted a warning from officials.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Redwood City officials warned against the use of fireworks after recent incidents of what they described as “large crowds of juvenile bicyclists visiting downtown.”
The incidents have involved traffic violations, property damage and the use of illegal fireworks, according to the city.
Fireworks are illegal in Redwood City and most cities on the Peninsula, and officials said they are seeing more commercial-grade fireworks — intended to be used by licensed operators for public display — being used.

One incident involving commercial-grade fireworks shattered glass at a local business, and police recently made a felony fireworks-related arrest because of the strength of the devices used.
Mayor Giselle Hale said she was working with the Redwood City Police Activities League and Redwood City Together to address what she called “youth behavioral issues manifesting in this behavior.”

“We know safety is job number one, and we’re working with our police and fire departments to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all who visit our downtown and the businesses who make it thrive,” Hale said.
Redwood City Police Chief Dan Mulholland said he wants to build a relationship with community members to address the fireworks concern rather than traditional methods of apprehension and detainment.
“We are here to listen and solve these issues collectively,” Mulholland said. “At the same time, we will intervene when necessary to ensure the safety of our businesses, residents, and visitors.”
The public is asked to call the Redwood City Police Department’s non-emergency line at (650) 780-7118 to report illegal fireworks.
“This time of year can be particularly challenging with illegal fireworks. The best way to prevent an injury is to leave the fireworks to the professionals and not attempt to set them off in the first place. Even sparklers burn at temperatures that can melt metal,” said Redwood City Fire Chief Ray Iverson. “Especially with the dire wildfire season and drought upon us, it’s not worth the risk.”
