Officers Fatally Shoot Man In San Mateo County: Police

The man was critically hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds before being pronounced dead, police said.

REDWOOD CITY, CA — Officers fatally shot a 48-year-old man Tuesday in Redwood City after receiving a report he fired a gun into the sidewalk, officials said.

At 2:31 p.m. on Tuesday, Redwood City Police Department officers said they received a 911 call reporting a man had discharged a firearm into the sidewalk before heading on foot towards the 200 block of Halzel Avenue.

Officers said they located the suspect, later identified as Jose Reynaldo Lombera, 48, of Redwood City, in the area.

Police said while attempting to contact Lombera he pulled out a gun and pointed it towards officers. Police said they fired their guns striking Lombera.

Lombera was transported to a local hospital to treat his gunshot wounds where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The officers directly involved have been placed on administrative leave, officials said.

The San Mateo County District Attorney's Office will lead the investigation, as per county protocol for officer-involved shootings.

No other injuries were reported.

At 4:47 p.m., the RCPD sent out an alert notifying locals of police activity occurring on the 100 block of Hemlock Avenue.

Roads were also closed in the area of Linden Street and Madrone Street.
