Tesla Driver Crashes Into SMC Home While Experiencing Mental Health Crisis: Police

The woman crashed through a backyard fence and the side of the home before colliding with a light pole, police said.

FOSTER CITY, CA — A 29-year-old woman experiencing a mental health crisis drove her Tesla sedan through a home Sunday in Foster City while three people slept inside, police said.

Just after midnight on Sunday, Foster City Police Department officers responded to a call that someone had slammed their car into a home on the 300 block of Thatcher Lane.

When officers arrived they said they found a 29-year-old woman sitting on the ground near her Tesla Sedan and she "appeared to be in a state of acute emotional and physical distress."

Police said the woman had been driving her car at a high rate of speed before crashing through a backyard fence and through the side of the home. The car ultimately came to rest after colliding with a light pole in the front yard, police said.

Three people were sleeping inside the home during the crash. None of the residents were injured.

Police and medical personnel said they evaluated the driver and determined she was experiencing a mental health crisis. She was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation, police said.

Police said they don't believe the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A case for reckless driving has been forwarded to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

City building inspectors also responded to assess the home's structural safety.
