A Hidden Rockridge Treasure: the Guy Hyde Chick House

Designed by iconic East Bay architect Bernard Maybeck, the house was built in 1913.

Tucked away in an oak grove on the upper reaches of Oakland's Chabot Road is a 1913 house designed by Bernard Maybeck — with a history as fascinating as its architecture.

It's known as the Guy Hyde Chick House (after its first owner), and visitors to the home over the years have included chef Julia Child and more recently actor Jeff Bridges and his wife, columnist Blake Gilmore writes in a column published this week on insidebayarea.com.

Gilmore shares several stories from the current owner, local art dealer Foster Goldstrom.

The house was also the subject of a 2011 article in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's magazine.

You may read the complete insidebayarea.com column (and see a photo of the house) here.
