Claremont Middle School: A Centennial Too Soon?

Claremont Middle School, which is planning a 100-year anniversary party in June, may be younger than the planners think.

Claremont Middle School is planning 100th anniversary festivities on June 1 — but it may be celebrating five years too early or 14 years too late, writes Anne Kasdin in the Montclarion this week.

Kasdin, who dug into documents at the Oakland Main Library's History Room, says Claremont has been at its present location, 5750 College Ave., only since 1918, not 1913 as a sign on the school indicates. She believes time eroded the "8" into a "3."

An alternative date for the school's founding might be 1899, when Claremont Grade School operated as a one-room schoolhouse at the corner of Claremont and College avenues, Kasdin writes.
