Kalb Talks About Residents' Part in Anti-Crime Efforts

In this video, the second of our two segments with Oakland District 1 City Councilman Dan Kalb on crime in Oakland, he discusses ways that residents can help address the issue and protect themselves.

With crime very much on the public mind, especially in the wake of two recent murders and other violent crimes in Rockridge and nearby areas, Patch on Monday asked Oakland District 1 City Councilman Dan Kalb for his thoughts on addressing the problem.

In a video segment of that interview published Wednesday, Kalb discussed the severity of the problem and measures that he would like to see the city adopt in the upcoming new budget, including more officers and resources for the police department. He issued a special appeal for hiring more civilian crime investigators.

In the video attached to this article, he talks about what residents can do, including how they can help the police and help protect themselves. He readily acknowledged that an increased police presence is the most important element of a crime-fighting strategy but also stressed that members of the public can play an important part.

Kalb, who took office in January and whose North Oakland district includes Rockridge, was the victim of an armed robbery near his Rockridge home in October when confronted on Manila Avenue by a gunman who took his wallet and cellphone. Another Rockridge man was shot in the shoulder by a mugger on Manila near the same location 12 days ago, on April 20.
