Highway 50 Lane Closures Planned at Watt Avenue Thursday & Friday

Lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. July 11 and July 12.

Expect delays if you're traveling onΒ Highway 50 at Watt Avenue after 10 p.m. and before 5 a.m. Thursday and Friday.Β

The overnight lane closures are part of a $25 million interchange project approved in April.Β

The project will modify the Watt Avenue interchange to realign and widen all of the on-ramps and off-ramps to remove the congested sections where traffic has to weave to get on and off of both Watt Avenue and the freeway, add through lanes on Watt Avenue and install two new traffic signals at the freeway off-ramps, Patch reported earlier.Β

Alternating lane closures will occur from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12.Β

From theΒ Sacramento County Department ofΒ Transportation:

As part of construction activities for the Watt Avenue @ US-50 Interchange Project, there will be alternating US-50 lane closures for twoΒ consecutive nights as follows: July 11 and July 12, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. AdditionalΒ information about overnight lane closures is listed below.

US-50 Westbound and Eastbound Lanes: Both westbound and eastbound US-50 willΒ experience full lane closures as follows:
  • Alternating lane closures of Eastbound and Westbound US-50 will occur on theΒ evenings of 7/11, and 7/12 from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., to adjust falsework forΒ construction of the infill portion of the Watt Avenue Overcrossing.
  • When all main highway lanes are closed, motorists will be detoured to existingΒ auxiliary lanes adjacent to US-50.Β
  • Motorists will always have access to at least one through lane on US-50 duringΒ lane closure periods.Β
  • Only one direction of US-50 will be affected at a time.
Delays: Motorists may experience delays and are advised to drive through theΒ construction area with caution.Β

Interchange Construction: The Watt Avenue @ US-50 interchange project will modifyΒ the existing interchange to reduce congestion, install dedicated transit facilities, andΒ improve access and safety for bicyclists and pedestrians. Project work during theseΒ closure evenings will include crews working each night to construct support beamsΒ called falsework. The falsework will serve as support for the new overcrossing untilΒ construction is complete, and the structure can support its own weight.Β

Your Patience is Appreciated: Sacramento County understands the challenges andΒ inconvenience that motorists will experience during the closure period. The patienceΒ and cooperation of the traveling public is appreciated as work to construct theΒ interchange project continues.Β
