School Board to Vote on James Marshall Closure Thursday

Some Rosemont parents and students will learn the fate of their school this week.

The Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Education is scheduled to vote Thursday night on whether or not the district should close James W. Marshall Elementary School and nine other elementary schools.

A March 7 vote will decide the fate of Tahoe Elementary, but the school board could decide to close Mark Twain instead.

Closing the 11 schools, which the district says are under-enrolled, would save $2.5 million each year, according to a staff report.

Still, Rosemont's representative on the school board isn't convinced it's a good idea.

"The Board of Education needs to look at the entire picture and not just the schools that are under-enrolled," Trustee Christina Pritchett said in a previous interview with Patch. "The current plan needs to just go away and we just need to start over."

The schools being voted on Thursday are:

1. Fruit Ridge Elementary School 
2. James W. Marshall Elementary School 
3. Washington Elementary School 
4. Collis P. Huntington Elementary School
5. Susan B. Anthony Elementary School
6. Bret Harte Elementary School
7. Joseph Bonnheim Elementary School 
8. Mark Hopkins Elementary School
9. Clayton B. Wire Elementary School
10. Maple Elementary School
