Roseville Mosquitoes Found with West Nile Virus

Placer County officials recommend draining standing water and using insect repellent.

Mosquito samples taken from surveillance traps in Roseville and Placer County have tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District.

Two dead birds have tested positive for the virus this year, but public health officials say there could be many more following late spring rainstorms that created fertile ground where mosquitoes can lay their eggs.

“The most recent rain, followed by the very high temperatures in the next few days create ideal conditions for a surge in the mosquito population,” said Joel Buettner, General Manager of the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District.

With West Nile virus activity increasing, the district is encouraging the public to be proactive in preventing mosquito-transmitted diseases. That includes draining any standing water, wearing insect repellent (the type with DEET in it) and making sure screens on doors and windows are working.

“Eliminating any potential mosquito sources and using repellents will help minimize individual risk for West Nile virus,” Buettner explains.

The district has increased surveillance of larval and adult mosquitoes in the area. Treatments for larval mosquitoes are already underway and scheduled for Monday for adult mosquitoes.
