ROSEVILLE, CA — A man shot a California Highway Patrol officer, then took two innocent bystanders hostage at a Roseville park before shooting both, killing one and injuring another, police confirmed Thursday. The "rapidly evolving situation" near Mahany Park's little league fields prompted a massive emergency response on the northeastern end of the Sacramento metro area.

The Roseville Police Department said the situation unfolded quickly at 12:30 p.m. as officers warned residents to avoid the area and park facilities entered lockdowns. Camp kids were relocated to Quail Glen Elementary School for pickup.

During a news briefing late Thursday afternoon, officials said the suspect shot an officer attempting to serve an arrest warrant. CHP declined to provide specific details on the injuries but said medics rushed the officer to the hospital in stable condition. According to The Sacramento Bee, scanner traffic indicated the officer was hit in the hand and chest.

After shooting the officer, police said the suspect took two adults as hostages shortly before shooting both victims and killing one. Neither victim has been formally identified.

Once law enforcement was able to take the shooter into custody, he was taken to the hospital with injuries unrelated to gunfire. A detailed timeline of the shooting was not immediately available, but a police spokesman said he expected to share more information Friday.
