Mosquito District Reports Increase in West Nile Virus Activity

No humans have tested positive, but mosquitoes found west of Roseville have tested positive for West Nile virus recently.

Although no one has tested positive for West Nile in Placer County this year, there is an increase in West Nile virus activity locally.

According to the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District, 16 mosquito samples from agricultural areas west of Roseville and surveillance traps in Sheridan have tested positive for West Nile virus β€” the highest weekly count of West Nile virus-positive mosquito samples this summer.

β€œAlthough West Nile virus activity in our district has lagged behind our neighbors in Sacramento, we are definitely seeing a spike in samples testing positive,” said Joel Buettner, general manager of the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District, in a news release.

β€œThis is the time in the season when we can really use help from our residents, and we certainly appreciate all the reports of dead birds and mosquito sources, such as unmaintained swimming pools,” Buettner said.

When residents report information to the district, they are able to target treatment of immature mosquitoes before they are capable of spreading West Nile virus, according to the district.

The Placer Mosquito and Vector Control advises the public to implement the "3 Ds" of protection:

  • Drain any standing water that may produce mosquitoes.
  • Defend yourself and your home by using and effective insect repellent and dressing protectively when outside, and making sure screens on doors and windows are in good condition.
