SACRAMENTO, CA —A 26-year-old man who police said was arrested in connection with the mass shooting early Sunday in downtown Sacramento is not facing arrest related to any homicides during the shooting, prosecutors said.

Dandrae Martin was booked on assault and gun charges after the shooting, which also left 12 people wounded, with injuries ranging from minor to critical but stable, police said Monday.

“Right now that’s really all we’re able to share about him,"Police Chief Kathy Lester told KCRA-TV. "As you know this is a complex investigation and we’re looking for multiple suspects and so we’re currently working to identify what his role was the night of the shooting."

In a news release Monday, police said investigators worked through the night and into the early morning hours Monday to process the "horrific" shooting on K Street, located in the city's busy entertainment district. At least three buildings and three vehicles were struck by gunfire and investigators found more than 100 expended shell casings at the scene.

Police identified Martin as a related suspect, but Anne Marie Schubert, the district attorney for Sacramento County, said police were looking for multiple shooters, and that the individual arrested was not arrested for any related homicide.

"The investigation is highly complex involving many witnesses, videos of numerous types and significant physical evidence," Schubert said.

Law enforcement expects to make more arrests in the case, and Schubert stressed that prosecutors can't comment on specifics due to ethical obligations.

"We will be reviewing the evidence provided to our office and making a determination of what, if any, charges are appropriate," Schubert said. "If charges are filed, the complaint will be released to the public."

Detectives searched three homes in the area, finding at least one handgun, police said.

Authorities have said they were looking for multiple suspects in the shooting. A manhunt was underway for at least shooters who opened fire on a crowded street in the city's entertainment district.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office on Monday identified the women shot and killed as Johntaya Alexander, 21; Melinda Davis, 57; and Yamile Martinez-Andrade, 21. The men were identified as Sergio Harris, 38; Joshua Hoye-Lucchesi, 32; and DeVazia Turner, 29.

Mourners created a makeshift memorial to remember the victims, KTVU reported. Sacramento City Council candidate Caity Maple launched a GoFundMe account to raise money for the victims.

Police said Sunday afternoon they have not identified any suspects but believe multiple shooters were responsible for the carnage, which happened around 2 a.m. outside a nightclub in the 1000 block of K Street.

Of the 12 wounded, at least four were critically hurt, the Sacramento Fire Department said.

Police Chief Kathy Lester shared few investigation details and asked the public to come forward with videos and other evidence that could help catch the killers.

"The scale of violence that just happened in our city is unprecedented during my 27 years here," Lester told reporters at a news conference. "We are shocked and heartbroken by this tragedy. But we are also resolved as an agency to find those responsible and to secure justice for the victims and the families."

Police said they did not know if a recorded fracas was connected to the shooting. Graphic witness videos posted on social media showed rapid gunfire for at least 45 seconds as people screamed and ran for cover.

Police found a stolen handgun, but they did not know if it was used in the shooting.

Loved Ones Mourn Victims

'He Was Always The Life Of The Party'

Kay Harris, 32, told The Associated Press that family called her as she slept with tragic news: They thought her brother Sergio, 38, was among the dead. She thought he was at the London nightclub, near the shooting.

Pamela Harris, Sergio's mother, told news outlets her son was shot and killed in the shooting, and called the shooting "senseless."

"Hopefully they’ll catch these people and prosecute them to the fullest,” Pamela Harris told the “Today” show.

"My son was a very vivacious young man," Harris said. "Fun to be around, liked to party, smiling all the time. Don't bother people. For this to happen is crazy. I'm just to the point right now, I don’t know what to do. I don’t even feel like this is real. I feel like this is a dream."

Activist Stevante Clark, brother of Stephon Clark, who was shot and killed by police in 2018, told The Sacramento Bee he and his brother were friends with Harris.

“We used to party together and have fun together,” Clark said.

Clark also said Harris often went to the London nightclub.

“He was always the life of the party. He was so loved. Honestly, you don’t find anyone say a bad thing about him," Clark said.

Sergio's wife, Leticia Harris, told KCRA-TV the shooting was a "sad and terrible act of violence that took the lives of many."

"I want answers so I can have closure for my children," she said.

Vacaville Father Of Four Among Dead

Family members identified DeVazia Turner, 29, as one of the victims in the shooting. Turner was a father who was living in Vacaville but was from Sacramento, KCRA-TV reported.

Turner's father, Frank, told the Sacramento Bee his son also frequented downtown Sacramento nightclubs, including London. He told KTXL he was working security in the Bay Area when he got the news his son was killed.

“He was out just having fun with his friends,” Frank Turner said.

He added that Harris and Turner were cousins.

“There’s just nothing to say. I’m just here. I’m grief, that’s all — grief. You know what I’m saying? That’s all I can say,” Frank Turner told KTXL.

He said he has not officially heard from police and expressed frustration that more information wasn't available.

Turner's sister Tamika Young told KPIX-TV he had four children.

“They killed my brother,” she told the TV station. “I’ll probably be crying five minutes from now. I just want to make sure the world to know he was loved. Make sure that’s the message that is known — he was definitely loved and he will always be loved.”

'Very Sassy Lady' Among Dead

Melinda Davis was a “very sassy lady” who often slept in the doorways of businesses along the street in Sacramento, including near the shooting site, The Sacramento Bee reported.

“Melinda was a very eccentric individual, a very sassy lady,” Shawn Peter, a guide with the Downtown Sacramento Partnership who knew Davis for 15 years, told the newspaper.

He said Davis had a shopping cart and a sleeping bag. If she was lucky, she also had a tent.

'Brought Light To The Room'

Yamile Martinez-Andrade was shot and killed in front of her best friend, ABC 10.

She was described as someone who “brought light to the room,” and had a positive outlook, the TV station reported.

“There was never a dull moment with her. She has a beautiful heart and a beautiful mind. Everyone misses her so much,” her best friend, who was not named, told the station.
