📰 News we're reading

1. Judge Blocks Trump Administration Limits on Federal Housing Funds for Homelessness Programs (abc10.com) — Sacramento homelessness agencies just got a major reprieve, as a federal judge in Sacramento temporarily blocked Trump administration limits that would have sharply reduced federal funding for permanent housing projects. Local groups like Sacramento Steps Forward and the Sacramento Regional Coalition to End Homelessness say the pause protects existing housing programs while a lawsuit over the policy changes moves forward.

2. Law enforcement coordinated raid nets $800K in stolen goods, 13 suspects arrested (fox40.com) — Sacramento law enforcement played a key role in busting a Northern California retail theft ring, with the CHP’s Valley Division task force and Sacramento Police helping recover over $800,000 in stolen goods. Cal Expo in Sacramento even hosted the massive cataloging effort after 13 suspects were arrested and thousands of items were seized across multiple cities.

3. Horizon Air flight has bird strike after takeoff from Sacramento International Airport (kcra.com) — A Horizon Air flight from Sacramento to Seattle hit a bird shortly after takeoff Tuesday evening and returned safely to Sacramento International Airport, with emergency crews ultimately called off. Alaska Airlines says the crew declared an emergency out of caution, and the plane is now being inspected. Federal data show wildlife strikes at SMF are common but rarely dangerous.

4. $50,000 total reward announced for information on fugitive and missing kids (kmph.com) — Law enforcement in Sacramento County is seeking tips on fugitive Camron Lee and his two missing young children, with a combined FBI reward of up to $50,000. Residents are urged to report any information that could help locate Lee or safely recover Athena and Mateo, who disappeared after their mother was found dead in 2024.

5. Holiday travel surge expected as airports brace for record crowds (kcra.com) — Sacramento-area air travelers should expect especially busy TSA lines through Jan. 4 as federal officials project a record 44.3 million people will be screened nationwide. New rules include REAL ID enforcement, a future fee-based backup ID process, shoe-on screening, and family lanes at some airports, so residents are urged to arrive early and double-check identification.
