SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey will announce his retirement on Thursday, The Athletic reports.

The former Rookie of the Year, MVP and seven-time All-Star spent his entire 12-year career in the majors with San Francisco.

Posey’s reason for retirement wasn’t immediately known, but if the 34-year-old’s comments after the Giants’ decisive Game 5 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in last month’s divisional series is any guide, his retirement decision likely centers around family.

“I'm definitely just going to take some time with my wife, talk with her, be able to be full-time dad of four kids for the first time in a while,” Posey told reporters.

“Yeah, just kind of take it slow and see how things progress.”

Posey got his first call-up in 2009.

He earned Rookie of the Year Honors in 2010 when he led San Francisco to the first of three World Series titles.

He was the NL MVP in 2012, when he batted 336 with 24 home runs and 103 RBI, his best year from a statistical standpoint.

Posey opted out of the COVID-truncated 2020 season to care for his adopted twin girls who were born prematurely.
