The coyote was about a quarter-mile from shore when the video was taken and eventually returned safely to the island, according to the state park.

There are about 14 coyotes on the island after the first swam there from Tiburon in 2017, the state park said, noting the animals are strong swimmers.
"Coyotes are strong swimmers," the park said in a comment on the video. "Park staff work daily to protect coyote, mainly by teaching the public what to do and not to do if they encounter a coyote. One of the greatest harms to coyote, and all wild animals on the island is littering, and the intentional and unintentional, feeding of them.

“When wild animals come to associate humans with foods, in the worst case, it can lead to dangerous encounters. What can you do to help coyote? Don’t litter, pick up litter, don’t leave behind food waste such as shells and peels in the woods or water, never feed any wild animals, and keep a safe distance.”
