Man Charged With Hate Crime In SF
The accused man told the victim he "hates Mexicans," according to the district attorney's office.
SAN FRANCISCO — A 33-year-old man who allegedly threatened a San Francisco resident with a gun and told him he "hates Mexicans" has been charged with assault and a hate crime, the district attorney's office said Thursday.
The victim was watching football with friends on Sunday in the open garage of his home in the city's Tenderloin neighborhood when Elliott Quinones approached and allegedly drew out a semi-automatic gun.
Prosecutors said Quinones allegedly racked the slide and pressed it into the victim's ribs, told him that he would return and that he "hates Mexicans."

It's the second time in as many weeks that the district attorney has filed hate crime charges in connection with an assault in the city.
Akiah Brewster, 33, was arrested on Jan. 21 after she allegedly assaulted someone on a Muni bus with a glass bottle, then battered a second person as she shouted anti-Latino epithets, prosecutors said.
Brewster was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, battery and a hate crime and pleaded not guilty, the district attorney's office said in a press release.
"Our city has now experienced two hate crimes against members of our Latino community within a matter of weeks," Jenkins said. "This is an alarming trend and my office will take action to ensure that there is accountability and consequences for people who choose to sow hate, division and mistrust like this."
