San Francisco Expands U.N. Skate Plaza To Engage More Skaters

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — City leaders and skateboarders gathered Friday to unveil the expanded United Nations Skate Plaza, adding 2,100 square feet of new skateable space in the heart of downtown.

The expansion, designed by Olympic skateboarder and architect Alexis Sablone, features three geometric skateable art pieces.

The project, made possible through partnerships with The Skatepark Project (TSP) and Converse, aims to enhance accessibility and engagement for skaters of all skill levels, city officials said.

Officials praised the project as part of San Francisco's broader effort to revitalize U.N. Plaza, which debuted in November 2023 following a $2 million overhaul by the Recreation and Park Department.

"This isn't just a skate plaza--it's a symbol of how we can creatively transform public spaces to meet the needs of our community and make our neighborhoods safer and more connected," said District 5 Supervisor Bilal Mahmood, representative for the Civic Center neighborhood.

A celebration hosted by Converse, TSP, and Skate Like a Girl took place on Saturday, and featured giveaways, trick competitions, and live skate demos.

The plaza, originally designed by local skateboarders, remains a key attraction in the city's downtown, drawing more than 340,000 visitors in its first year and contributing to a 79% reduction in daytime drug-related incidents, city officials said.
