SF Police Shoot, Kill Armed Man Near Union Square
Police say the man had driven up onto a sidewalk where he hit a woman and child pedestrians, and a bicyclist.

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco police early Friday morning shot and killed someone near Union Square after he had allegedly struck pedestrians and a bicyclist with a vehicle hours earlier.
Officers initially responded at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday to the area of Kearny and Post streets where a speeding vehicle had gone onto a sidewalk and hit two pedestrians, then continued and struck a bicyclist in the area of Sutter and Kearny streets before fleeing the scene, according to police.
The two pedestrians, a woman and girl, were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive. Police said they were not able to locate the bicyclist who was allegedly struck by the car.

At about 1:35 a.m. Friday, officers located the suspect vehicle in the area of Post Street and Grant Avenue with someone inside. Officers surrounded and approached the vehicle and "during the encounter, an officer involved shooting occurred" and "the armed male suspect was struck by gunfire," police said.
He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries there. His name was not immediately released. Police recovered a firearm at the scene following the shooting.

Investigators did not release any details about what prompted the shooting but said they will hold a town hall meeting about the case within 10 days, as is department policy following a shooting by an officer.
