SAN FRANCISCO — One person is dead, and a second was hurt in a shooting Wednesday morning on a San Francisco Municipal Railway train, officials said.

The shooting happened inside the train between Forest Hill and Castro stations, Myrna Melgar, the city's District 7 supervisor, tweeted.

One person was killed, and a second was hospitalized and was expected to survive, police said. No details were given about the victims, and neither was identified.

The shooting was reported near Market and Castro streets just before 10 a.m. Wednesday.

“When the train stopped, the perpetrator ran out, along with all of the people on the packed train,” Melgar told The Associated Press.

"SFPD has set up investigation at the Castro station. NOT an active shooter at this time but suspect still at large," she tweeted.

Melgar said David Lazar, the city's deputy chief, told her a heated argument broke out inside the train before gunfire erupted.

“There was an altercation between folks who may have known each other inside the subway before it stopped in Castro,” said Rafael Mandelman, supervisor of the Castro District.

All trains from Forest Hill station to Castro were suspended, she said. The MTA put people on buses from Forest Hill to Castro.

Homicide investigators were at the station, investigations commander Raj Vaswani tweeted.

"Anyone that witnessed the shooting or have info, contact us," Vaswani said. "Because this is a developing investigation, more info will not be released at this time."
