Storms Causes Major Delays and Cancelations at SFO

San Francisco airport is reporting many delays and cancelations due to today's El Nino winds and rain.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA- Wind and especially heavy rain is causing cancellations and delays this morning at San Francisco International Airport, while operations at the two other major area airports are going smoothly.

Duty manager Nancie Parker of San Francisco International Airport said as of 8:30 a.m. 53 flights have been canceled and 92 delays have been reported.

The delays are about 30 to 90 minutes but may increase to 145 minutes later today as the weather worsens. Most of the delays and cancellations are on flights up and down the west coast of the United States to places such as Los Angeles and Seattle.

"Because that's where all the rain is," Parker said. The wind speed was 16 mph at 8:30 a.m. and gusts are expected to reach 45 to 50 mph, which may cause the number of delays and cancellations to increase.

Parker is asking people to check with their carrier before coming to the airport to see whether their flight has been delayed or canceled. Operations at Oakland International Airport and Mineta San Jose International Airport are running smoothly.
