The city, Parkside Intermediate School and the San Bruno Lions Club invite the community to help them fold a thousand paper cranes on Thursday as part of a fundraiser to give hope and encouragement to those in Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake and tsunami.
The crane in Japan is one of the most mystical creatures, and it is said to live a thousand years. A Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish, such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. A thousand paper cranes strung together is called “senbazuru." It is a special gift given to special friends and family. It symbolizes hope, peace and prosperity.
"It is our wish that Japan recovers swiftly from the disaster brought about by the earthquake and tsunami," the organizers said. "It is our hope that the symbolic gesture of making a thousand cranes will send rays of hope from the serious loss, destruction, hardship and unhappiness among our Japanese friends, especially for the people of Narita City, San Bruno’s sister city for over 20 years."
