Beginning June 30, all 296 SamTrans buses will be equipped with . Installation of the fareboxes is scheduled to begin this weekend.
SamTrans is replacing its old-style mechanical fareboxes that have been in service for more than 20 years, with a state-of-the art model that accepts cash, coins, tokens and paper magnetic-stripe tickets. The new fareboxes have the capability to issue a Change Card in the event a customer overpays, and also will eventually be able to sell Day passes, something that the current fareboxes aren’t equipped to do.
In April, SamTrans began testing the new farebox system to help bus operators become familiar with the new equipment and ensure that the system was performing reliably. A “how-to-guide” is available on all buses, and SamTrans staff is visiting key transit stops to provide the guide to riders. A short video on how to use the new farebox is available on the SamTrans website along with other information about the fareboxes.
