Youth Baseball Signups Start Saturday

On site signups for the San Bruno Youth Baseball League will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 14 and 21 from 9 a.m.-noon, Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 28 from 9 a.m.-noon, all at the San Bruno Recreation Center.

San Bruno Youth Baseball offers four levels of baseball experience for boys and girls ages 4-12. The Tee Ball level is for 4- to 5-year-olds. There is a six-week “season” that is held on the outfield grass between Diamonds 1 and 2 in City Park on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. beginning in Mid April. This is a basic introduction to baseball with no scores being kept.

The Farm Level League is for 6- to 7-year-olds. There will be a six- to eight-game “season” with games played at Greenberg Field. This is a coach pitch league. However, if a player needs a little extra help, a tee is available to ensure the success of the at-bat.  This level focuses on the fundamentals of baseball, hitting the ball, running the bases, fielding the ball and attempting to make plays for outs.

An inning consists of three outs or once through the batting order.  We use a “flex ball” that is more sturdy than a tee ball, but not as hard as a baseball. Games are primarily on Saturdays and Sundays in April and May.

Our Pee Wee Level League is for 8- to 10-year olds. This is an established league consisting of 12 teams in two divisions. New players attend an “evaluation” day where they are put through a series of drills that consist of fielding, throwing, batting and running, after which league managers “draft” the players onto their team based on age needs.

This is a 16-game season, with games being played on Tuesdays, Thursdays, some Fridays, and Saturday and Sundays. This is a coach pitch league, and real baseball rules apply. The games have a 2 ½ hour time limit and are nine innings long. Scores are kept and a league champion is crowned.  We use several fields throughout the city of San Bruno.

The league begins with practices in late February, opening day is March 31, and the season runs through Father’s Day. This league also offers tryouts for summer all-stars in two divisions: 8 year old and under and 10 years old and under.

Our Bronco League is for 11- to 12-year-olds. This is a player pitch league, with a 14-game to 20-game season, with a few games played against our neighbor to the south, Millbrae. New players attend an “evaluation” day where they are put through a series of drills that consist of fielding, throwing, batting and running, after which league managers “draft” the players onto their team based on age needs.

Games are played primarily at Lions Field on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sunday beginning with practices in February and games from mid-April to June.  There are currently five teams, but based on signups we will expand one, if not two, teams. There is a playoff system in place and a league champion is crowned. The league offers a summer all-star team.
