Mountain Lion Spotted in San Carlos

The animal was seen crossing a residential street early Tuesday morning.

A mountain lion was spotted in the hills of San Carlos early Tuesday morning, San Mateo County emergency officials said.

The cat was seen crossing the street near the 400 block of Portofino Drive at about 1:15 a.m., according to the county. That neighborhood is located near Big Canyon Park.

Residents who live in mountain lion habitats are advised to avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk or at night when the animals are most active. In the event of an encounter, wildlife officials advise facing the animal, trying to look bigger, making noise and throwing objects at the cat.

More information on mountain lions is available on the Department of Fish and Wildlife's website at www.keepmewild.org.
