Dead Baby From 1981 Bay Area Cold Case Identified: Police

Officers found a dead baby in a park in 1981 and through advancements in forensic science, they finally know their identity, police said.

SAN BRUNO, CA — Officers have identified the remains of a baby who was found dead in 1981 in a San Bruno park and they have also uncovered the identity of the child's parents, police said.

At around 4 p.m. on Nov. 11, 1981, San Bruno Police Department officers said they responded to Buckeye Park on Rosewood Drive after the remains of an unidentified baby were found in a garbage can.

The baby had been dead for only a few hours. It had been strangled and had severe head injuries, according to a 1981 police report.

Police said they estimated the baby had been placed there around 11 a.m. that same day. The report stated that reddish, brown human hair and black dog hair was found on the sock used to strangle the baby.

At the time, police said they were unable to identify the baby or the person responsible for their death.

For over four decades the case remained unsolved.

Using forensic genetic genealogy, San Bruno Police identified the infant's family. While the parents' names are being withheld, this is a major step in the case, renewing efforts for justice, police said.
