SAN BRUNO, CA — The onslaught of layoffs from Bay Area tech employers continued this week when YouTube cut roughly 100 workers, according to media reports.

The San Bruno-based Google subsidiary is undergoing a restructuring that will affect its teams in creator management and operations, according to the creator economy publication Tubefilter.

Before Wednesday’s layoffs, YouTube had 7,173 employees, according to the New York Times, citing a person with knowledge of the business. The video streaming platform has been embattled amid an inflation-related advertising slowdown and competition from TikTok, the newspaper reported.

The layoffs come in the wake of moves last week by Google to eliminate hundreds of jobs related to Google Assistant, knowledge and information, devices and services, and central engineering.

Those cuts follow pledges by executives of Google and its parent company Alphabet to reduce costs. A year ago, Google said it would lay off 12,000 employees, or around 6 percent of its workforce.

Google is one of many tech giants to slash jobs in recent weeks, along with Amazon and Spotify.
