More than half of California is mountain lion habitat. Mountain lions generally exist wherever deer are found. They are solitary and elusive, and their nature is to avoid humans, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Attacks on people are extremely rare but do happen. If threatened by a mountain lion, by all means, don't run. Their instinct as a cat is to chase.
