San Clemente Honors the Fallen Monday

The City of San Clemente invites members of the public to join our community leaders at the annual Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 27, 2013 to commemorate our nation’s fallen soldiers of war. The program is from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the San Clemente Community Center at 100 North Calle Seville. The program is free and open to the public. The featured keynote speaker is Major Edward Solis, serving as a Battalion Executive Officer in the Second Battalion, Recruit Training Regiment in the United States Marine Corps of San Diego. The City also welcomes special guest speaker from the United States Navy, Commander Virginia Schoenfeld (RET) and a San Clemente resident. For speaker biographies, please visit www.san-clemente.org. San Clemente Mayor Robert Baker will present the City’s welcome address; San Clemente Chief of Police Services, Lt. John Coppock will conduct the Pledge of Allegiance; and, the Sons of the American Revolution will participate by Posting the Colors in full uniform dress. Returning this year are Duncan Wilson, and OCFA Firefighter Tommy Harris playing traditional bagpipes and Tim Mathieson as the Taps Bugler. The City invites all local civic organizations to participate in the presentation of wreaths and florals ceremony. The public is also welcome to bring items of memorabilia of their fallen to exhibit at the Memorial Display area. This event is sponsored by the City of San Clemente, and supported by the US Marine Corps League, South Coast Detachment 022, Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Veteran’s of Foreign War, Post #7142, as well as many military, civic and local business organizations. The community is also invited to observe Memorial Day at Park Semper Fi from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. to honor all branches of the United States Military. LtCol Richard Joyce, CO HMLA-469 is the honored guest speaker. A special presentation will be made by Mayor Robert Baker to San Clemente’s newest adopted squadron, HMLA-469. Music will be performed by South Coast Singers and Taps by Michael W. Timson of Buglers Across America. Family members of San Clemente’s adopted unit, the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines will also be in attendance.
