San Clemente Hosts Surf Portion of Surf-Motorcross Event
This week's competition, featuring motocross racers who surf and surfers who ride will air on NBC Sunday.
The Toyota Surfercross competition this week happened Monday and Tuesday with a motocross competition in Perris and a surf competition at San Onofre.
The event sprang from a sort of action sports brotherhood—surfers and motocross racers tend to move in some of the same social circles.
“We knew a bunch of surfers and they liked to ride,” said Jeremy Albrecht, the manager of the Joe Gibbs Racing team and a founder of the Surfercross event.

Albrecht said he lined up bikes from industry companies for the surfers to ride in the Perris race Monday.
He said the waves were decent Tuesday for the surf competition as well.

The event will be shown as a segment during the live NBC broadcast of the Unadilla National on August 14, as well as on allisports.com.
The Pro class is invite-only, and this year’s roster included professional riders such as Josh Grant, Justin Brayton, Robbie Madison, Tara Geiger, Sarah Whitmore, Sean Borkenhagen and Michael Sleeter, as well as former top riders Jeff Emig and Jeff “Chicken” Matiasevich. This year’s overall winners received one-of-a-kind engraved guitars, courtesy of Fender, according to a release from the Surfercross organizers.
There were also close to 50 spots open for people from both the moto and surf industries to compete for trophies and bragging rights.
