Second Radioactive Generator Piece Reaches Utah Dump

A second retired steam generator from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station reached its destination Wednesday without incident, according to a spokesman for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

The equipment is left over from the As part of the renovation, technicians replaced the aging steam generators, which power the turbines to create electricity.

"The transport vehicle carrying the retired San Onofre steam generator successfully reached the EnergySolutions site in Clive, Utah, a licensed disposal facility," said spokesman Scott Andresen in an email. "The trip was completed in 18 days, one day less than the first shipment due to lessons learned. The transport crew operated the 400-foot-long vehicle safely through San Diego, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, as well as Nevada and part of Utah, on schedule."

The generators had specially built carriages to haul the pieces.
