Sheriff Releases Statement On Right To Protest In San Mateo County

The sheriff previously released a statement on how ICE raids would be handled in the county.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office released an official statement regarding protests as demonstrations took place all over the nation Saturday, police said.

"We fully support the First Amendment right of individuals to peacefully assemble and
express their views. Our priority is to ensure the safety and security of everyone in the community—demonstrators, residents, and businesses alike," said Sheriff Christina Corpus.

The SMC Sheriff's Office said Friday they would be actively monitoring demonstrations Saturday and would respond if necessary to maintain public order.

"While we respect and protect the right to protest, any unlawful behavior or acts of violence will not be tolerated," Corpus said. "Those who engage in such conduct will be held accountable under the law."

On Wednesday, Corpus released an official statement regarding ICE raids.

“I want to reiterate our policy regarding the operations of ICE (U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement). Our policy complies with applicable state law. Additionally, our policy states that we ‘will comply only with judicial warrants,'" Corpus said.
