SAN MATEO, CA — The San Mateo Police Department will be on the lookout for illegal fireworks over the July 4 holiday, and the city will close multiple parks to deter dangerous behavior, according to officials.

All fireworks, including those classified as "safe and sane," are illegal within San Mateo city limits. Violators can expect to have their fireworks confiscated and could be subject to costly fines and be on the hook for property damage.

"Just one spark from a firework could set off an enormous blaze, taxing the already limited resources we have," the department said Monday. "The sound of fireworks also put many on edge. Fireworks are exceedingly disruptive to our neighbors including children, the elderly, veterans, those with PTSD, and pets."

Police encourage neighbors to report fireworks using the non-emergency dispatch number at 650-522-7700 and ask witnesses to provide as much detail as possible. Residents can also submit reports via an online form.

According to the department, an officer has to personally witness a violation to enforce a citation, and police will be deployed on high-visibility patrols throughout the holiday.

San Mateo residents have several ways to celebrate July 4, including 4th of July in the Park at Central Park, beginning at 11 a.m. Permitted fireworks displays will begin at 9:30 p.m. in Redwood City and Foster City.
