SAN MATEO, CA — The San Mateo Union High School District is among the school districts around the country in need of substitute teachers.
Last Wednesday, the district announced 71 COVID-19 cases out of 1,000 tests administered, with positive cases in every school. The district was also unable to contact trace to previous levels given the high number of cases.
The San Mateo Union High School District includes schools in San Mateo, Burlingame, Hillsdale, Capuchino, Aragon and Mills.

Substitute teachers in the district make $47 per hour or $235 per day.

In a letter last week, Superintendent Kevin Skelly asked staff, students and families to “operate as if they have daily exposure to the virus” and that the district was suspending positive case letters to shift resources to testing.

Students were asked to stay home for at least five days if they tested positive for COVID-19.
“If the consensus of health experts is correct, cases may decline in a few weeks,” Skelly wrote. “For now, our primary goal should be to continue to offer in-person instruction to our students as safely as possible.”
