SAN RAFAEL, CA — The Marin County Sheriff's Office arrested a convicted felon last week after discovering guns he was legally prohibited from owning, officials said Monday.

The sheriff's office identified the man as Ashwan Wells, of San Rafael, who deputies said was prohibited from firearms or ammunition after a 2017 felony conviction for robbery and "threats with intent to terrorize."

Acting on information, a special unit detained Wells during a traffic stop on Highway 580. Detectives noted the man's 9-month-old child was riding in the vehicle unrestrained on the passenger's lap.

After searching Wells' home, detectives said they found a loaded, short-barreled AR-15 with no serial number and a loaded 9mm pistol. Detectives noted the AR-15 had a round in the chamber and was sitting on a bag where the young child could have reached the weapon.

Wells was booked into jail on suspicion of three felony charges and the sheriff's office asked the DA's office to add a charge for child endangerment.
