Chain Strike Sparks Ignited 135-Acre Marin Blaze: Report

NOVATO, CA — Sparks from a chain strike in the roadway ignited a 135-acre Marin wildfire Monday, The Press Democrat reports.
The Novato blaze triggered major traffic delays during the evening commute.
No evacuations were issued, and no injuries or property damage was reported.

The Novato Fire District issued an alert at 4:46 p.m. urging residents to avoid the area of the Redwood Sanitary Landfill where a 5-acre grassfire started.

The chain was hanging from a vehicle when it scraped the roadway, according to the report.
Investigators found evidence of the chain strike, but the probe is ongoing, Marin County Fire Battalion Chief Bret McTigue told The Press Democrat.
"There was evidence collected at the scene that puts it as probable cause of a chain strike in the roadway in multiple spots,” McTigue said.
“We don’t know exactly how many there were from that source of ignition.”
