SAN RAFAEL, CA — An officer patrolling San Rafael Monday evening witnessed a robbery in progress and chased down the fleeing suspects, arresting a convicted felon and recovering contraband, according to police.

Authorities said the officer saw one man take a bag out of a vehicle that two suspects had just broken into near Golden Hinde Boulevard and Los Ranchitos Road. As the officer drove toward the men, police said they jumped into a waiting pickup truck. The officer chased the truck to a dead-end street, where the passenger jumped out and ran away.

Police said the officer detained the driver while waiting for backup, and police did not immediately locate the second man. A search of the pickup revealed drugs, a loaded handgun, the bag taken during the burglary and other stolen property, police allege.
