Marin Boasts Nation's Highest Booster Rate: CDC

San Francisco ranked second, Santa Clara third and San Mateo fourth.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — One of the nation’s most vaccinated community’s boasts the nation’s top booster rate.

Marin, which a year ago was ranked the nation’s most vaccinated county according to data compiled by The San Francisco Chronicle, fell to second in that category, the county’s top health official said earlier this week during a presentation before the Board of Supervisors.

But Marin tops the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranking for the top booster rate, Health Officer Dr. Matt Willis said.

All of the top four and six of the nation's top 10 most boosted counties are Bay Area communities. San Francisco ranked second, Santa Clara third and San Mateo fourth.

Alameda and Contra Costa Counties ranked eighth and 10th according to the CDC data. Sonoma County ranked 12th and Santa Cruz 16th.

“The Bay Area really stands out nationally as being the most highly vaccinated (and boosted) region in the United States,” Willis said.

Marin and San Francisco are the only counties with booster rates well above 55 percent.

Nationally, just 44.6 percent of the population has received booster shots, according to the CDC.

Webb County, a Texas border county that heavily emphasizes equity in its vaccination strategy, moved ahead of Marin for the nation’s highest rate of fully vaccinated residents, Willis said.

Fully vaccinated is defined by the CDC as having least two Moderna or Pfizer vaccines administered or one Johnson & Johnson jab.
