Marin County In Talks To Extend Moratorium On Evictions: Reports

The original ban on evictions is set to expire May 31.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — Marin County could extend its moratorium on evictions until June 30, according to local publications. The original countywide eviction ban is set to expire May 31, unless the county's board of officials decide on an extension.

Marin Independent Journal reports, if extended, the moratorium would apply to properties in cities, towns and unincorporated areas.

The Journal reports the current restrictions on evictions do not apply to tenants who are still able to pay their rent. To qualify, a resident has 30 days after his or her rent is due to notify a landlord of an impending late payment. Tenants must also provide documentation proving they were unable to pay because of the coronavirus.

The Journal reports the county allows the following reasons for allowing rent to go unpaid: loss of income because of a business closure, a layoff or reduction in hours, the cost of child care because of a school closure, medical expenses incurred because of COVID-19 or money lost to the care for a family member.

NBC Bay Area reports other California counties are also considering extending moratoriums on evictions. According to the report, San Mateo County is considering extending its ban until 90 days after shelter-in-place orders are lifted.
