MARIN COUNTY, CA — Maverick Marin winemaker Sean Thackery has died, The San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Thackery, who lived in Bolinas, was also an accomplished photographer and a professional art dealer, according to the report. He was 79.

Thackery was a staunch critic of the wine industry, and the Thackery & Co. adopted unconventional methods developed in ancient times ahead of the more modern techniques, according to the report.

Thackery would leave harvested grapes outside for a day before crushing and fermenting them, a method he learned from the ancient Greek poet Hesiod, the report said.

Nearly all modern winemakers keep harvested grapes cold before they’re crushed, but Thackery marched to his own beat, according to Elizabeth Corsini, who co-owns of Springboard Wine Co., a distributor that sold Thackrey’s wines in California, The Chronicle reports.

“Everyone will tell you you’re supposed to keep the grapes cold,” Corsini told The Chronicle.

“But he said that if ancient winemaking cultures did it, they had to be doing it for a reason.”
