Stabbing Suspect Arrested In San Rafael

Police allege the 42-year-old San Rafael man stabbed a man who was walking a dog Friday night in outside a Canal apartment.

SAN RAFAEL, CA — San Rafael police arrested a man over the weekend accused of stabbing a man who was walking his dog Friday night outside an apartment complex in the Canal neighborhood.

Dispatchers fielded a 911 call reporting a stabbing on Kerner Boulevard around 8:40 p.m. Friday. Officers and medics rushed to the scene and found a man with three stab wounds. He told first responders that a man he did not know approached him and quickly attacked him.

One of the witnesses police interviewed said they had encountered the man before and shared a cell phone video of the suspect, who one of the officers immediately recognized. Police canvassed the area for the suspect but did not locate him Friday.

Police identified the suspect as Alexander Amaya-Rodriguez, 42, of San Rafael.

The next morning, police received a call that Amaya-Rodriguez had returned to the same apartment complex and was knocking on doors. Officers arrived at the apartment and quickly spotted the man, who was arrested without incident. Officers said he was carrying the same knife used in the stabbing.

During an interview, police said Amaya-Rodriguez admitted to the stabbing and had no known link to the victim. He was booked into Marin County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and felony assault with a deadly weapon. The victim was treated at a local hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
