Suspect Arrested In Connection With Marin Explosion: Cops

Debra Ellen Hazelwood, a 61-year-old woman who lives in the Marinship Park encampment, was charged with arson, police said.

MARIN COUNTY, CA — A suspect has been arrested in connection with an explosion at a Marin homeless encampment, Sausalito police said.

Debra Ellen Hazelwood, a 61-year-old woman who lives in the Marinship Park encampment, was charged with arson and is in Marin County jail on $150,000 bail, police said.

Hazelwood’s arrest followed an explosion at Marinship Park Wednesday night that burned two tents and endangered other residents in the outdoor facility for unsheltered members of the community, police said.

Fire officials directed officers to a tent on the northwest side of the tennis courts with a propane tank inside that had exploded, destroying two tents, according to police.

“(Hazelwood) admitted to using a cigarette lighter to set both tents on fire: the tent with the propane tank and also another nearby that turned out to be her own tent,” police said.

A judge raised Hazelwood’s bail from $50,000 to $150,000 at the request of Sausalito authorities, police said.
