Garbage Truck Catches Fire In San Ramon, Burning Trash Pile Extinguished

A garbage truck caught fire on San Ramon Valley Boulevard Tuesday morning, according to the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District.

SAN RAMON, CA — A garbage fire started inside of a garbage truck in San Ramon Tuesday morning, according to the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District.

The fire broke out at 7:26 a.m. near the intersection of San Ramon Valley Boulevard and Castleton Court, according to the Pulsepoint app. Once the fire started, the driver offloaded all the burning trash onto a nearby parking lot, preventing further damage to the truck, according to SRVFPD.

Fire crews arrived and put out the flames. Dramatic photos posted by SRVFPD shows a huge pile of smoldering trash in an empty parking lot.

The incident was marked closed at 8:31 a.m.

The fire was likely caused by batteries, according to SRVFPD. Batteries, including alkaline batteries and rechargeable batteries must be recycled. It is illegal to throw alkaline batteries in the trash in California. Many electronics stores or hazardous waste centers have battery recycling bins.
